CBD & Antioxidants

Antioxidants fight free radicals in your body.

Free radicals are compounds that can cause distress if their levels elevate in your body. They are linked to illnesses such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Naturally, your body has its own antioxidant defenses to keep free radicals at bay.

Your lifestyle, stress and factors in your environment are known to promote free radical development, such as:

  • Alcohol intake
  • Bacterial, viral or fungal infections
  • Radiation
  • Toxins
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Excessive intake of iron, magnesium, copper or zinc

Science’s view on CBD as an antioxidant

As you know, there is limited scientific research on CBD meaning that companies such as ours cannot make claims about its effectiveness. However, the research which has been done with regard to CBD working as an antioxidant is magnificent.

In the early 1990s research was undertaken to find out how effective CBD was as an antioxidant. The conclusion was that it was more effective against glutamate neurotoxicity (nasty chemicals that kill cells when in high concentrations) than a-tocopherol (vitamin E) or ascorbate (vitamin C). Basically, the results on this research indicated that CBD is a powerful antioxidant.

CBD & other antioxidants

Vitamin C is considered to be an ultra-strong antioxidant that should be in your skin care regime for a number of benefits. One article described it as a “free radical scavenger”. As studies have shown CBD to be arguably more powerful in acting as an antioxidant, these two ingredients are a match made in heaven. However, vitamin C can be an unstable molecule and should be stored in cool places out of direct sunlight, as should CBD.

If being an antioxidant was CBD’s only benefit alone, this would be amazing. However, this may be only one of the superpowers of CBD…
